Well, I wanted to understand the new HD radio features in the 2011 Foresters. It's a newer digital format that gives a clearer signal for both FM and AM. Here's what I found:

Basically, digital radio works the same as conventional radio. There’s a signal on one end and a receiver on the other. But there are a few key differences.
[1] Instead of sending out one analog signal, stations send out a bundled signal – both analog and digital. Because it is digital, textual data such as traffic, stock info and song titles can be sent out, as well.
[2] The digital signal layer is compressed.
[3] The combined analog and digital signals are transmitted.
[4] Inevitably, radio signals bounce off objects, causing what is called multipath distortions. This is what causes the static in conventional radio receivers. HD Digital radio receivers are designed to sort through reflected signals, reducing static, hiss, pops and fades.
[5] Finally, the signals reach their destination. Both broadcasts are free, with no subscription fee. To hear the digital broadcast, all you need is an HD Radio receiver. (Source: hdradio.com)

Wow, I always like to give credit where it's due and I was happy to get a new 2011 Hyundai Sonata for a rental today. I wanted to see what all the news was about with this competitor's sedan. It sure looks sharp. But Subaru always seems to have a method to their ways. We went out to see the car and when it came to the back seat, sorry for the guys in the back. I'd say wear a helmet, but there is no room.

Our 2011 Legacy has amazing rear seat comfort and legroom. I figured this new Sonata was going to be a challenge. I'm 6 feet tall. In the Hyundai, my head touches the rear window trim. In the Legacy, I could put three fingers between my head and the roof. Maybe not the most scientific test, but head bumpin' doesn't need a ruler.

Wow... I was moving some of our nice used cars around this afternoon at our Tampa location and saw a great opportunity to show how and why Subaru is so popular with folks that think out their purchases.

We have a late model Honda CR-V, another late model Nissan Rogue and a late model Subaru Forester.

I had to back the Rogue up the Mastro Subaru canopy, where our front line cars are... and thankfully it has mirrors. So I decided to compare our Subaru Forester to the others.

I was amazed to do a side by side comparison. Rear visibility is much better in the Forester. The low cut of the glass also makes it easier to see the little ones that might be in the driveway. The angle of vision is much better.

May 7 (Bloomberg) -- Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the Toyota Motor Corp. affiliate that makes Subaru cars, will boost output at its Indiana plant for the fifth time in a year and hire more workers to meet surging U.S. demand.
Annual production capacity at the Lafayette factory should reach as many as 140,000 Subarus by year’s end, a 40 percent increase, Tom Easterday, the facility’s executive vice president, said today in an interview. The plant’s second line can build as many as 100,000 Toyota Camrys a year.
“I’ve been here 21 years, since it opened, and we’ve never had growth this phenomenal,” Easterday said. The plant, once a joint venture shared with Japanese truckmaker Isuzu Motors Ltd., should build a record 220,000 vehicles this year, he said.
Fuji Heavy, based in Tokyo, is taking advantage of a 41 percent jump in Subaru’s U.S. sales through April. The Lafayette plant used 95 percent of its capacity in 2010’s first quarter, up from 61 percent a year earlier, said Haig Stoddard, an analyst at consultant IHS Global Insight in Troy, Michigan.
“That increase is all due to Subarus,” Stoddard said. “Camry production was relatively flat with a year ago.”

Subaru of Indiana Automotive has added 200 workers, pushing employment to 3,326, with 40 more people still to be hired, Easterday said.

Another larger than expected turnout was organized by Arnie Goodman, and lots of fun was had by all, while raising badly needed research money for a great cause.

The Mastro Family are big on "giving back" and do so through events like this one.

We brought our Subarus and displayed the special
prize kayak that was raffled off, courtesy of Sweetwater Kayaks.

Subaru announced recently that special orders for 2010 models are going to be ended on March 22nd. Due to the fantastic reception that the new product has received, this cutoff date allows them to finish the ordered cars in time for summer. After this, factory changes and processes will be modified for the next model year production. Doing this in a environmentally safe fashion even makes it better!

It's been a great couple of years for Subaru, defying the marketplace gloom and delivering cars that we are all proud of. It takes a lot to impress a Subaru buyer and to say that it was done is an understatement. We have a great product!

Remove your car bra for cleaning!

WOW!! I was going out to take photos of this nice 2002 Forester, and realized that it had the vinyl bra on it. These nose protectors or "bras" are great for protecting the front paint, but you need to remove them from time to time and clean both the underside of the bra and the car too! Here's a perfect example of why... look at the junk that has built up under this! Luckily, it cleaned up ok and no damage was done... but YUCK!

Wow! we're all amaed at how successful Cash for Clunkers was. In addition to the dozens of big guzzlers we took in, the buzz around the program stirred folks to come out and look at cars. Subaru sales increase again!

Subaru of America Inc. said Wednesday its sales last month rose by 14 percent, helped by demand for its compact line and its smaller SUV.

The Cherry Hill, N.J.-based car maker sold 18,932 vehicles in August, up from 16,573 last year.

Sales were particularly strong for the Forester, a five-passenger SUV, which recorded a 73 percent gain in sales, and the five-door Impreza, a compact whose sales were up 44 percent.

On the downside, the Tribeca, an SUV that seats up to seven, saw a 53 percent drop in sales last month.

Through eight months, Subaru’s sales are up 6 percent.

Subaru of America is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
